The Game Diaries: Shin Megami Tensei IV - Part 02

Hello, and welcome to the second installment of The Game Diaries: Shin Megami Tensei IV.
Find out what happened in the previous installment.

This Time in Shin Megami Tensei IV:
"Damn it, Navarre!"

Events of Note:
  • Commencement of the quest: "A Missing Fellow Samurai"
  • My first experimentation with Demon Fusion
  • The 3rd Stratum of Naraku
  • Boss battle against Naga
  • Boss battle against Wendigo
  • Naraku's Domain
  • Boss battle against Alraune

So this venture in SMT IV was a long one, a little longer than I'd initially intended but I think that's only because the quest "A Missing Fellow Samurai" was way more involved than I'd initially expected it to be.

Surely you remember this charming fellow? If not, I suggest you just say you do in order to avoid a long-winded rant about him being Navarre and how insulted he is that mere casualry have the nerve to forget him.
No stranger to talking all kinds of mess, luck would have it that now he is need of your help. Navarre has gone missing within Naraku and you will need to find him.

A Missing Fellow Samurai
Client: Name withheld
Reward: 1000 Macca
Task: Find the missing Navarre.
The details are just as I explained a moment ago. You must find Navarre, who has gone missing in Naraku. He must be petrified with isolation and fear in that place where demons roam... You must find him at once!

This seems like a simple enough quest. Go through Naraku, fight any demons who spring up on your way, and find Navarre. Only thing is, in order to get to Navarre, you have to go through three different boss fights.

I decided to play around with some Fusion at the beginning of this quest. I'm used to fusing due to Persona, but some reason, the Demon Fusion app is cumbersome to deal with to me. I feel like I can never see enough information at once in order to make a good decision. And of course, being as stubborn as I am, I can't just go with what's recommended.

After walking through Naraku, you come across a hooded man. This hooded man has an issue with Samurai who think they can get through if they just push themselves hard enough, so he wants to show you how wrong that way of thinking is by throwing a boss battle at you.

Boss Battle: vs. Naga (Lv 10)

Wasn't really too bad of a boss battle. The worst part was that there were two of them. Then there was the physical move Lunge which proved to be a bit of an issue since if it hits, it can lead to one-hit KO's, which in turn lead to extra turns for the enemy, which in turn can lead to more use of Lunge, which in turn can lead into more one-hit KO's, and the cycle continues. Luckily, Naga is weak to Agi/Fire skills so a demon in your party capable of using fire skills would prove extremely useful in this fight.

Into the 3rd Stratum of Naraku
After showing the hooded man that you can, in fact, get through if you push yourself hard enough, you will be able to get to the 3rd Stratum of Naraku. There are some new demons you can try to recruit in this Stratum as well as some zombies. All of the zombies are weak to fire, so if you still don't have a demon capable of using Agi skills, please get one. You can beat them easily with just regular physical attacks, and that may be a good strategy to consider if you want to conserve MP.

There is also a poison area in the 3rd Stratum, and unfortunately, you can't avoid it. Just get through it and don't de-Poison until you get through it. After this jolly good time in the poison mist, you will run into another boss battle, courtesy of the hooded man.

Boss Battle: vs. Wendigo (Lv 10)

He is weak to fire as well. At this point, you should have a demon who is capable of Agi/Fire skills. Put them to use here. After defeating this lone Wendigo, the hooded man has more for you: an entire horde Wendigo and Naga. Thankfully, you get some back up from your friends.

Naraku Domain
After winning the previous boss fight, soon you run into what is known as a Demon Domain, which is like a trap that demons set up in order to capture prey. It's a weird looking place, but the music is pretty good, better than the regular areas of Naraku. Soon upon entering, we encounter a little girl who is "pushing a wheel with a stick." More importantly (at least at this point in time), you meet a man in red sitting a chair. This man, who I assume is spending a lot of idle time in Naraku since he has invested in furniture, is named Stephen. He is good. He will give you the chance to heal your party.
He also tells you that you will need to defeat the demon that created this domain in order to make it go away.

Boss Battle: vs. Alraune (Lv 11)

While she looks kind of human, she isn't. Rather, she's a demon who just loves the taste of young human blood. And, as with the previous bosses, she is weak to fire. Kind of ironic that so many demons are weak to fire of all elements, hm? Maybe I'm the only one who sees this.

Navarre...
We found Navarre!
...And as usual, he can't offer a simple thank you, just a snide remark about how you did well for being a casualry. Also, it seems Navarre was out to get you as this whole thing was a set up put in place to scare you all off. Navarre then proceeds to say that he in fact is the true victim and how his life hasn't been the same since the gauntlet chose him, had he not have become a Samurai, he could have kept living his cushy, privileged life but instead he has to fight demons, blah blah.

It seems as if this is all a bit too much for Navarre...

And this concludes the second installment of the Shin Megami Tensei IV edition of The Game Diaries.
Next time, we will eat breakfast. See you in the morning.
